Active Tours: Skagway, Alaska
White Pass Railway and Heli-Hike

Combine a scenic helicopter flight and a ride aboard the historic White Pass narrow-gauge railroad with a wilderness hike in the Tongass National Forest. This fully-guided adventure is the perfect mix of exercise and breathtaking scenery.

First, board a helicopter for the flight over the Juneau Icefield to Glacier Station. Set off on a five-mile hike along the remote upper Skagway River to view magnificent Laughton Glacier. Your guides provide information about the region’s unique natural history throughout the hike, allowing plenty of time for wildlife viewing and photographs. Bears, mountain goats and moose all call the Laughton Valley home.

After returning to Glacier Station, board the White Pass & Yukon Route railroad for the hour-long scenic ride back to Skagway, enjoying a "bush buffet" of salmon pâté, cheese and crackers.

In early summer, snow conditions may require an alternate version of this tour. During this time, you may experience a unique trekking opportunity on the Snowshoe Hike & Rail Adventure. On this tour, ride the "Scenic Railway of the World" and then strap on snowshoes for an exhilarating hike. Board the White Pass & Yukon Route railroad for a one-hour ride to Glacier Station, where you are outfitted with snowshoes. After a brief orientation, embark on a four to five mile roundtrip hike. Your guides discuss the natural history and geography of the region, home to moose, bear and mountain goats. Learn the dynamics of snow science and have lunch in this unique setting. Enjoy breathtaking views as you snowshoe up the frozen Skagway River to majestic Laughton Glacier. Back at the trailhead, you are greeted with a traditional "bush buffet", complete with a cold brew, before your train ride back to Skagway.

Duration of the alternate tour is approximately 9 hours and the price is $195 per person (Minimum age is 9.)

Snowshoe experience is not required, however this is a strenuous hike and participants should be in good physical condition. Hiking boots are available; please notify the onboard Shore Excursion Office to reserve a pair in your size.
